  1. BSF orders 'high alert' along Bangladesh border
    • The Border Security Force (BSF) issued a "high alert" across all its formations along the 4,096-km India-Bangladesh border in the wake of the developments in the neighbouring country, officials said. BSF director general (acting) Daljit Singh Chawdhary and other senior commanders have landed in Kolkata to review the security situation, they said.
    • The force has directed all its field commanders to be "on ground" and "deploy all personnel on border duty immediately".The leaves of all the personnel posted along the Bangladesh border were cancelled in the last few weeks after Bangladesh witnessed massive protests and now all units have been asked to "acquire an all alert posture", he said.
  2. J&K marks 5th anniversary of Article 370 abrogation amidst heightened security and protest, BJP to hold rally
    • Security has been significantly increased across Jammu and Kashmir on the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, which occurred on August 5, 2019. This action revoked the region's special status and statehood, splitting it into two Union Territories. Jammu and Kashmir Police have established checkposts at various locations and intensified patrolling, especially in the Akhnoor LoC area.
    • "Looking at the terrorist activity, we are always alert, be it August 5 or August 15," said SP South Jammu, Ajay Sharma. "We want to assure everybody that we are not leaving any stone unturned when it comes to security."

  1. US military eyes Australia's Indian Ocean toe hold to deter China
    • A remote Australian island close to an Indian Ocean chokepoint for Chinese oil shipments is on a list of possible locations for U.S. military construction aimed at detering China, with the U.S. saying it "may or may not" support American forces.Australia's Cocos Islands is listed along with the Philippines, Timor Leste and Papua New Guinea for anticipated construction projects under the Pacific Deterrence Initiative, designed to enhance U.S. force posture and infrastructure to counter China.
    • The Cocos Islands, with a population of 600, sits 3,000 km (1,864 miles) west of the Australian mainland and is described by the Australian Defence Force as key to its maritime surveillance operations in the Indian Ocean, where China is increasing submarine activity.
  2. 'Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina resigned, interim govt to be formed,' Army chief confirms
    • Bangladesh Army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman confirmed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned from her post and fled the country.Addressing the nation amid the national turmoil, Zaman requested the students to stay calm and go back home.
    • The Army chief also urged the citizens to stop violence and said that there is no need for curfew or any emergency in the country.Hasina, who has ruled since 2009, had defied weeks of demands for her to stand down but fled following a brutal day of unrest on Sunday in which nearly 100 people died.
