Army Day is celebrated in recognition of Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa, the then Lieutenant General taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. It is celebrated every year in memory of India taking charge from General Sir Francis Butcher, who was the last British Commander-in-Chief of India on 15 January 1949.
The Turks invaded India from the time of Mahmud of Ghazni with the help of their better equipment, leaders and horses. The Turks were predominantly archers on horse or camel and spearmen. They had camels which were quick and did not require fodder and survived in extreme temperatures.

Colonel Balwan Singh is one of those officers who are remembered for their service during the Kargil War. It has been 21 years since the war began and it still continues to be as fresh as it can be in the minds of the people.
