Every year on June 21, the world unites to celebrate International Yoga Day—a day dedicated to the ancient practice that brings harmony to body, mind, and spirit. This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” shines a light on the interconnectedness of personal well-being and planetary health. Let’s dive into why this day matters and how you can participate, both on and off the mat!

Why June 21?

June 21 was chosen as International Yoga Day because it marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. This day symbolizes balance, energy, and renewal—values at the heart of yoga. The United Nations officially recognized this day in 2014, thanks to a proposal by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, making yoga a global movement for health and peace.

What’s Special About 2025?

This year marks the 11th anniversary of International Yoga Day. The theme encourages us to see yoga as a tool not just for individual wellness, but for the health of our planet. Events like Yoga Sangam—a mass yoga demonstration at 100,000 locations across India—show the power of collective action.

Other exciting events include:

- Yoga Bandhan: Community bonding through group sessions

- Yoga Park: Temporary yoga zones in public parks

- Yoga Samavesh: Inclusive yoga for everyone, especially underserved groups

- Harit Yoga: Tree-planting drives and eco-awareness

- Yoga Mahakumbh: A grand conclave of global yoga masters.

Yoga Poses for “One Earth, One Health” 🌍

Here are a few yoga poses (asanas) that embody the spirit of this year’s theme:

1. Tree Pose (Vrksasana)

- How to do it: Stand tall, shift weight to one leg, place the sole of your other foot on your inner thigh or calf (avoid the knee), and bring your hands to your heart or overhead.

- Why it fits: Symbolizes rootedness and connection to the Earth, encouraging balance and mindfulness.

2. Mountain Pose (Tadasana)

- How to do it: Stand with feet together, arms by your sides, and spine tall. Breathe deeply.

- Why it fits: Promotes grounding and awareness of your body and surroundings.

3. Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II)

- How to do it: Step feet wide apart, turn one foot out, bend the knee, and extend arms parallel to the floor.

- Why it fits: Builds strength and courage, reminding us to stand strong for our planet.

4. Child’s Pose (Balasana)

- How to do it: Kneel, sit back on your heels, and stretch your arms forward, forehead to the mat.

- Why it fits: Encourages surrender and connection to the Earth, fostering humility and rest.

5. Seated Forward Bend (Paschimottanasana)

- How to do it: Sit with legs straight, fold forward from the hips, reaching for your toes.

- Why it fits: Promotes introspection and harmony with yourself and the world.

How Can You Participate?

- Join a local or virtual yoga event.

- Practice yoga outdoors to connect with nature.

- Plant a tree or participate in a clean-up drive.

- Share your yoga journey on social media with #YogaForOneEarthOneHealth.

International Yoga Day is more than just a celebration—it’s a movement. By practicing yoga, we honor our connection to ourselves, each other, and the Earth. This year, let’s breathe, stretch, and act together for a healthier planet and a healthier you.

Happy International Yoga Day! 🧘‍♂️🌱🌍

Namaste.🙏
