1. Tripura Tops Panchayat Advancement Index (PAI) 2.0
The Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj released the Panchayat Advancement Index (PAI) 2.0 for FY 2023–24, ranking rural local bodies based on their performance across nine thematic areas of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Top Performer: Tripura secured the first position among states. Out of its 1,176 rural bodies, 943 (roughly 80%) were categorized as 'Front Runners' (scoring 75–90 on a scale of 100).
- The Ranking Scale: Panchayats are graded as Achiever (90–100), Front Runner (75–90), Performer (60–75), Aspirant (40–60), and Beginner (below 40). Notably, no panchayat in India reached the 'Achiever' status.
- National Performance: Kerala and Odisha followed Tripura as the next best performers. In contrast, large states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar lagged significantly.

2. India Signs First Agreements for Underground Coal Gasification (UCG)
In a historic shift for the energy sector, the Ministry of Coal executed production agreements for four coal mines specifically equipped with Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) provisions.
- The Companies: Reliance Industries Limited secured the Recherla and Chintalpudi Sector A1 mines (Andhra Pradesh). Axis Energy Ventures secured the Dip Extension of Belpahar and Tangardihi East mines (Odisha).
- What is UCG? This technology converts coal into synthetic gas (syngas) in situ (directly in the ground) without traditional mining. It allows energy extraction from deep or thin seams that are otherwise unworkable.
- Strategic Use: The syngas produced will serve as a domestic feedstock for urea, ammonia, and petrochemicals, reducing India's dependence on imported natural gas.
