1. Surha Tal Becomes India's 100th Ramsar Site
On the occasion of World Environment Day (June 5, 2026), the Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary, popularly known as Surha Tal, was officially designated as India's 100th Ramsar Site.
- Location & Geography: It is a natural, perennial freshwater oxbow lake located in the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, formed by the meandering of the Ganga River. It covers an area of approximately 3,432.93 hectares.
- Ecological Significance: The wetland is a vital habitat for resident and migratory waterbirds traveling along the Central Asian Flyway (CAF), hosting rare species like the Common Pochard and the Indian River Tern.
- Regional Standing: This addition marks a massive milestone, making India the country with the highest number of Ramsar Sites in Asia (ranking 3rd globally behind the UK and Mexico). With this, Uttar Pradesh boasts 13 designated wetlands.
2. 'Navachar Mantra' National Initiative Launched
On June 3, 2026, Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, officially launched 'Navachar Mantra' in New Delhi.
- Objective: A flagship national initiative designed to identify, mentor, nurture, and scale promising grassroots innovators and early-stage entrepreneurs, specifically targeting talent from Tier-2, Tier-3 towns, and rural India.
- Key Partners: The program is driven by the National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD), with the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), IIT Delhi serving as the Technical Knowledge Partner.
- Framework: Focused on priority sectors like Agritech, HealthTech, EdTech, and Climate Sustainability, the platform provides innovators with direct access to industry leaders, funding channels, and policymakers. Applications are open via the Skill India Digital Hub until July 5, 2026.
3. Lionel Messi Wins the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports
Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has been granted the prestigious 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, announced by the foundation in Spain on June 3, 2026.
