2) Indian Army Launches Drone Competition ‘Surya Dronnathan’ in Himachal Pradesh

The Indian Army has initiated ‘Surya Dronnathan’, a first-of-its-kind drone innovation challenge in Himachal Pradesh. The competition aims to encourage development of advanced unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for surveillance, logistics, and tactical operations in difficult terrains like the Himalayas. This move reflects the Army’s increasing adoption of indigenous drone technology for border security and modern warfare.

Why it matters: With India’s borders spanning high-altitude and remote regions, drones can enhance reconnaissance, reduce risks for soldiers, and improve supply chain efficiency.

3) Maharashtra Government Launches ‘Garud Drishti’ to Detect Social Media Fraud

To combat the rise in online scams, cyberbullying, and misinformation, the Maharashtra Government has launched ‘Garud Drishti’—an advanced AI-enabled monitoring system. The tool will scan social media platforms to detect and track fraudulent or harmful activities, ensuring quicker police intervention.

Background: India has seen a sharp rise in cybercrime cases, with social media platforms often exploited for phishing, fake job offers, and hate speech. ‘Garud Drishti’ aims to make the state a leader in proactive cyber policing.

4) India Hosts World Athletics Bronze-Level Continental Competition for the First Time

For the first time ever, India will host a World Athletics Bronze-Level Continental Tour event at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar. This prestigious event will bring together top athletes from across Asia and beyond, providing Indian athletes exposure to international competition standards on home soil.

5) World Elephant Day Observed on 12 August

World Elephant Day, celebrated every year on 12 August, aims to raise awareness about the protection and preservation of elephants. The day highlights threats like poaching, habitat loss, and human-elephant conflict.

Context for India: India is home to over 60% of the world’s Asian elephant population, with key habitats in states like Karnataka, Kerala, Assam, and Odisha. Initiatives such as Project Elephant and the Gaj Yatra campaign are helping protect this majestic species.
