1) Tuvalu to Move Its Entire Population to Australia Under World’s First Climate Migration Plan

The Pacific island nation of Tuvalu has announced the world’s first planned population migration agreement, under which its citizens will gradually relocate to Australia due to rising sea levels caused by climate change.

Why it matters: Tuvalu, with a population of about 11,000 people, is one of the countries most threatened by global warming, with some of its islands already sinking. This sets a global precedent for climate-driven migration policies.

Background: In 2023, Tuvalu signed a bilateral treaty with Australia ensuring “climate mobility” rights for its citizens. The move highlights how climate change is no longer a distant threat but an existential crisis for small island states.

2) Parliament Passes New Income Tax Bill; To Be Effective from 1 April 2026

The Indian Parliament has passed the New Income Tax Bill, which will replace the old Income Tax Act of 1961. The new law will come into force from 1 April 2026.

Why it matters: The new bill aims to simplify tax structures, reduce litigation, and align India’s taxation system with global standards.

Context: India has been debating a new tax framework for years, and this is the biggest reform in direct taxation in over six decades. Detailed rules on slabs, exemptions, and compliance are expected to be notified in the coming months.

3) Chennai’s Rohit Krishna Becomes India’s 89th Chess Grandmaster

Young chess talent Rohit Krishna from Chennai has earned the title of Grandmaster, becoming India’s 89th GM.

Why it matters: India has been emerging as a global chess powerhouse, with Chennai being the “chess capital of India,” producing legends like Viswanathan Anand.

Fun fact: India now consistently produces new GMs every year, strengthening its position in global chess tournaments and Olympiads.

4) World Organ Donation Day Observed on 14 August 2025

World Organ Donation Day is observed annually on 14 August to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation and encourage people to pledge their organs.

Why it matters: India faces a huge gap between demand and availability of organs—over 5 lakh people die every year due to lack of transplants.

Background: India’s government and NGOs are actively promoting initiatives like the National Organ Transplant Programme to improve awareness and infrastructure.

5) Indian Test Captain Shubman Gill Named ICC Men’s Player of the Month (July 2025)

Indian cricket’s rising star and current Test captain Shubman Gill has been named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for July 2025.

Why it matters: Gill, often dubbed the “Prince of Indian Cricket,” has shown consistent form, cementing his role as a future leader across formats.

Context: This recognition comes after a stellar run in international cricket, following in the footsteps of legends like Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and boosts India’s dominance in Test cricket.
