The Kerala State Biodiversity Board has launched a pilot programme for the restoration and conservation of Sacred Groves, locally known as Kavus.
- Initial Phase: The pilot covers five ecologically significant groves in Ernakulam, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
- Mechanism: Involves local Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs). The programme focuses on:
- Invasive Species Removal: Clearing non-native weeds and plastic waste.
- Kavu Nurseries: Establishing specialized nurseries to propagate native plant species specific to these micro-ecosystems.
- Bio-fencing: Using natural plant barriers instead of concrete walls to protect the groves.
- Significance: Kavus act as "mini-forests" that support local groundwater recharge, harbor medicinal plants, and preserve rare endemic flora and fauna.
5. AIIMS Delhi Introduces India's First Portable Bedside MRI
AIIMS New Delhi has become the first institution in India to routinely use a portable bedside MRI system for brain imaging, specifically the Hyperfine Swoop system.
- The Technology: Unlike traditional MRI machines that weigh tons and require shielded rooms, this device is wheelable and can be brought directly to a patient’s bedside in the ICU, Emergency Department, or Pediatric Ward.
- Patient Safety: It uses an ultra-low-field magnet, which is safer for patients with metallic implants and eliminates the life-threatening risks associated with transporting critically ill or unstable patients to a radiology suite.
- Clinical Impact: Led by Dr. Shailesh Gaikwad, the system allows for rapid point-of-care diagnosis for stroke, trauma, and post-operative neurological care, significantly speeding up life-saving decision-making.
