1. Nepal’s 17th-Century Jestha Varna Mahavihar Receives UNESCO Heritage Award


The historic Jestha Varna Mahavihar, a 17th-century Buddhist monastery located in Lalitpur, Nepal, was officially presented with the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation (Award of Merit).


  • The Restoration: The ancient monastery suffered severe structural damage during the devastating magnitude 7.8 Gorkha earthquake in 2015. Its comprehensive restoration was undertaken with financial and technical support from the Government of India as part of a post-earthquake cultural heritage revival partnership.
  • Diplomatic Handover: The award ceremony highlighted the deep, shared civilizational and Buddhist heritage linking India and Nepal, with diplomats and local administrators celebrating the successful return of the site's original architectural integrity.


2. Jaipur Ranked 6th in Time Out's Global Happy City Index 2026


In the newly released Happy City Index 2026 curated by Time Out, the Pink City achieved a major global milestone, securing the 6th spot among the world's happiest cities.


  • The Global Leaderboard: The index was topped by London (UK), followed by New York City (2nd), Paris (3rd), Tokyo (4th), and Madrid (5th). Jaipur stands out as the only Indian city to secure a spot within the global top ten.
  • The Evaluation Metrics: Surveying over 24,000 urban residents worldwide, the index measured factors such as community vibes, everyday quality of life, access to nature, public governance, and local culture. Jaipur scored exceptionally high due to its vibrant living architecture, booming cultural tourism, and strong community well-being.

3. Tribal Ministry Launches 'TribeX' Digital Learning Ecosystem


Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Jual Oram officially launched TribeX, a first-of-its-kind digital learning platform custom-engineered to document, preserve, and globally promote India’s diverse tribal arts and traditional knowledge.


  • Academic Framework: Conceived as an advanced learning ecosystem, TribeX offers 20 free certificate courses spanning tribal paintings, handicrafts, handloom, and traditional musical instruments.
  • UGC-Recognized Diplomas: Crucially, the platform features five UGC-recognized, one-year hybrid Post Graduate diploma programs:

  2. Sustainable Tribal Culture Based Livelihood Practices
  3. Museology and Tribal Museum Management
  4. Tribal Arts and Crafts of India

4. Senior IPS Officer Amit Garg Appointed as Director of NCRB


The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) officially appointed Amit Garg as the new Director of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).


  • The Mandate: Garg, a highly decorated 1993-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, was previously serving as the Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA).
  • DG-Level Upgradation: To accommodate his appointment, the post of Director, NCRB, has been temporarily upgraded to the rank of Director General (DG) on a personal basis. Garg will lead the critical criminal data infrastructure agency through to his superannuation on October 31, 2027.


5. 'Bridge Man of India' & Padma Shri Awardee Girish Bharadwaj Passes Away


Girish Bharadwaj, the legendary social worker affectionately known as the "Bridge Man of India" (Sethu Bandhu), passed away on July 7, 2026, at the age of 76 in Sullia, Karnataka.


  • Grassroots Engineering: Over a prolific career spanning more than three decades, the mechanical engineering graduate dedicated his life to building over 140 low-cost suspension foot-bridges connecting remote, cut-off villages across Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, and Odisha.
  • Community Ownership: He was celebrated for utilizing local materials and pioneering the Shramdaan (voluntary community labor) model, giving rural communities a direct sense of ownership over their vital connectivity infrastructure. He was honored with the Padma Shri in 2017 for his services to rural development.


6. US Launches 'Operation Hard Ball' Targeting Lawrence Bishnoi Syndicate


In the largest-ever international offensive against India-linked transnational organized crime, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and multi-agency task forces launched Operation Hard Ball.


  • The Scale: The coordinated operation involved over 50 simultaneous raids executing federal indictments across the United States, Canada, and Europe, resulting in the arrest of 24 individuals and formal charges against 37 syndicate members.
  • The Targets: The multi-jurisdiction sweep explicitly targeted the global criminal enterprises operated by Lawrence Bishnoi (alleged to be running operations from prison via smuggled phones), Goldy Brar, Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, and the Ravinder Singh Dhanda drug-smuggling network.
  • Seizures & Charges: Investigators utilized confidential informants and fake extortion scenarios to intercept the encrypted networks, ultimately seizing over 1,000 kilograms of cocaine, military-grade firearms, and large reserves of illicit cash linked to cross-border drug trafficking and high-profile international extortion.

7. India Rises to 11th Largest FDI Recipient in UNCTAD World Investment Report 2026


According to the flagship World Investment Report 2026 released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), India has climbed two spots to become the 11th-largest recipient of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) globally.


  • The Inflow Rebound: Reversing previous declines, India’s foreign direct investment inflows witnessed a staggering 44% year-on-year jump, reaching $38.89 billion (up from $27.09 billion).
  • Key Growth Drivers: The surge was primarily fueled by India's aggressive advanced manufacturing push, policy shifts unblocking semiconductor and automotive electronics ecosystems, and Alphabet Inc.'s massive $14.5 billion greenfield data center project announcement.
  • Outward FDI: Simultaneously, India’s outward FDI jumped 47% to $35.66 billion, moving the country up to the 18th spot among the world's leading home economies for outward investment.
