1. ISRO Completes Critical Separation Tests for Gaganyaan Mission

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) completed a series of Crew Module–Service Module separation tests for the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme on 16 October 2026. The tests were conducted at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

The Gaganyaan spacecraft consists of two main components: the Crew Module, designed to carry astronauts, and the Service Module, which provides essential support during the mission. The successful separation of these modules is crucial for ensuring the safe return of astronauts to Earth.

The tests assessed the separation system and the performance of critical spacecraft components. These included avionics, inertial navigation systems and thermal protection components, which help maintain spacecraft functionality and protect the crew.

Gaganyaan aims to demonstrate India's capability to send humans into low Earth orbit and bring them safely back to Earth. The programme represents an important milestone in India's space exploration efforts.

Key facts for examinations:

  • Organisation: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)
  • Mission: Gaganyaan
  • Test location: Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Kerala
  • Crew Module: Designed to carry astronauts
  • Service Module: Provides essential spacecraft support

2. Pramod Bhagat and Bhavina Patel to Lead India's Contingent at the Asian Para Games

Indian para-sport champions Pramod Bhagat and Bhavina Patel were announced as flag bearers for India's contingent at the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, scheduled for 18–24 October 2026.

Pramod Bhagat is a leading Indian para-badminton player who has achieved considerable success at international competitions. Bhavina Patel is an accomplished para-table-tennis player who gained international recognition through her performances at major sporting events, including the Paralympic Games.

Their selection recognises their sporting achievements and contributions to Indian para-sports. The Asian Para Games provide a platform for athletes with disabilities from across Asia to compete at the highest level and promote inclusion through sport.

Key facts for examinations:

  • Event: Asian Para Games 2026
  • Host: Aichi-Nagoya, Japan
  • Dates: 18–24 October 2026
  • Indian flag bearers: Pramod Bhagat and Bhavina Patel
  • Sports: Para-badminton and para-table tennis, respectively

3. International Day for the Eradication of Poverty – 17 October

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed every year on 17 October to raise awareness about poverty, social exclusion and the importance of ensuring dignity and equal opportunities for everyone.

Established under the United Nations framework, the observance highlights that poverty extends beyond a lack of income. It can also involve inadequate housing, limited access to education and healthcare, unemployment and exclusion from essential services.

The 2026 focus is “Safe Homes for All,” under the broader 2026–2028 theme, “United for Peace and Human Rights.” It highlights the relationship between adequate housing, human dignity, security and poverty reduction.

In India, poverty alleviation efforts include affordable housing, food security, rural employment, financial inclusion and access to education and healthcare. Effective implementation of these initiatives is essential for inclusive and sustainable development.

Key facts for examinations:

  • Date: 17 October
  • Observed under: United Nations
  • 2026 focus: Safe Homes for All
  • Broader theme for 2026–2028: United for Peace and Human Rights
  • Related Sustainable Development Goal: SDG 1 – No Poverty

4. North Korea Reports Testing an Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Torpedo System

North Korea reported testing a new torpedo system incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The system, identified in reports as Zam-2.0, is claimed to use AI for target detection and guidance.

A torpedo is an underwater weapon designed to travel through water towards a designated target. In general, AI-assisted systems can process sensor information and help identify or track objects. However, the precise capabilities and operational performance of North Korea's reported system have not been independently established.

The announcement reflects North Korea's wider efforts to develop its naval capabilities and demonstrate advances in military technology. Such developments have implications for maritime security and regional defence planning.

The use of AI in military systems also raises international questions about autonomous weapons, accountability and the future of warfare.

Key facts for examinations:

  • Country: North Korea
  • Reported technology: AI-enabled torpedo system
  • Reported name: Zam-2.0
  • Claimed application: Target detection and guidance
  • Related topic: Artificial intelligence in defence technology

5. Prices of 137 Cancer Medicines Expected to Fall by Up to 70%

The Government of India announced a measure to make cancer treatment more affordable by rationalising trade margins on 137 identified non-scheduled anti-cancer medicines. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, is responsible for implementing the pricing measure.

The policy caps trade margins on the identified medicines at 30% under the prescribed framework. The government expects the maximum retail prices of some covered medicines to fall by as much as 70%, depending on their existing prices and distribution margins. The revised prices are scheduled to take effect from 9 November 2026.

Cancer treatment can impose a substantial financial burden on patients and their families. By limiting excessive trade margins, the initiative aims to improve access to essential medicines and reduce out-of-pocket expenditure.

The actual price reduction will vary from one medicine to another; the maximum reduction does not mean every covered medicine will become 70% cheaper.

Key facts for examinations:

  • Authority: National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA)
  • Ministry: Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers
  • Medicines covered: 137 identified anti-cancer medicines
  • Expected maximum price reduction: Up to 70%
  • Effective date: 9 November 2026
  • Policy mechanism: Trade Margin Rationalisation

6. MCD Plans Rooftop Solar Installations on 1,100 Buildings in Delhi

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) plans to install rooftop solar power systems on approximately 1,100 civic buildings across Delhi. The initiative aims to increase renewable-energy use, reduce electricity expenditure and improve energy efficiency in municipal facilities.

The proposed initiative uses the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model. Under this arrangement, a renewable-energy service provider generally finances, installs and operates the solar system, while the building or organisation purchases the electricity generated under an agreed arrangement.

Rooftop solar panels use photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity. Installing these systems on suitable public buildings can help meet part of their electricity requirements, reduce dependence on conventional grid power and lower electricity costs over time.

The project also supports India's wider transition towards clean energy. Its effectiveness will depend on rooftop suitability, installation capacity, maintenance and the terms of agreements with service providers.

Key facts for examinations:

  • Organisation: Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)
  • Location: Delhi, India
  • Buildings covered: Approximately 1,100
  • Technology: Rooftop solar photovoltaic systems
  • Proposed model: Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO)
  • Objectives: Promote renewable energy and reduce electricity expenditure
