2. Local Extinction Risk of Egyptian Vultures in South India

  • Scientific Name: Neophron percnopterus (Subspecies in India: Neophron percnopterus ginginianus, characterized by a pale yellow bill).
  • Current Status: Facing localized extinction across South India—no longer breeding in Tamil Nadu (disappeared from the Nilgiris) and critically depleted in Andhra Pradesh's Rayalaseema region.
  • Conservation & Protection Status:
  • IUCN Red List: Endangered.
  • Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972: Schedule I (Highest level of legal protection in India).
  • CITES: Appendix II.
  • Primary Threat Drivers:
  • Veterinary drug toxicosis from livestock carcasses (toxic NSAIDs like diclofenac, ketoprofen, and aceclofenac).
  • Electrocution via overhead high-tension power lines, habitat degradation, and quarrying.
  • Ecological & Biological Features:
  • Commonly called the "Pharaoh's Chicken" or white scavenger vulture.
  • One of the few avian species capable of tool use (uses pebbles as hammers to crack large eggs).

3. ISRO Gaganyaan Integrated Main Parachute Airdrop Test (IMAT-05)

  • Test Location: Conducted at the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) drop zone in Sheopur, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Inter-Agency Collaboration: Jointly executed by ISRO, DRDO (ADRDE, Agra), the Indian Air Force (IAF), and the Indian Army.
  • Test Mechanics:
  • An IAF IL-76 aircraft dropped a simulated crew module payload with a dummy mass from an altitude of 2.5 km.
  • Evaluated structural integrity and design margins under peak loads for the upcoming uncrewed Gaganyaan G1 mission.
  • Gaganyaan Deceleration Parachute Architecture:
  • The crew module utilizes a total of 10 parachutes belonging to 4 distinct functional types:
  1. 2 Apex Cover Separation Parachutes: Eject the protective cover of the parachute compartment.
  2. 2 Drogue Parachutes: Stabilize oscillations and reduce speed.
  3. 3 Pilot Parachutes: Extract the primary decelerators.
  4. 3 Main Parachutes: Slow down the crew module for a soft sea splashdown (any 2 of the 3 main parachutes are sufficient for a safe landing, providing built-in redundancy).
