1. 5th BRICS Supreme Audit Institutions (SAI) Leaders’ Summit
The 5th BRICS SAI Leaders’ Summit was held in Bengaluru, Karnataka, from May 7–8, 2026.
- Theme: "Ease of Living with a Focus on Urban Mobility."
- Host: The summit was hosted by the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) of India, K. Sanjay Murthy.
- Outcome: The meeting concluded with the adoption of the Bengaluru Declaration and the BRICS SAI Work Plan 2027–28.
- Focus: Delegates from nine BRICS nations (including new members like Egypt and the UAE) discussed leveraging data-driven and citizen-centric audit methodologies to evaluate public investments in urban infrastructure.
2. Trinidad and Tobago Adopts India’s UPI
Trinidad and Tobago has become the first Caribbean nation to officially adopt India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
- Bilateral Ties: This follows a partnership agreement aimed at modernizing the country's financial infrastructure and promoting digital governance.
- Scope: In addition to UPI, the two nations agreed to collaborate on other "India Stack" solutions such as DigiLocker and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).
- Global Reach: With this addition, UPI is now live or being integrated in several countries, including the UAE, Singapore, France, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.
3. Advanced Agni Missile with MIRV Technology Tested
India successfully conducted the flight test of an advanced version of the Agni missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology on May 8, 2026.
- Location: The test was carried out from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.
- Strategic Capability: MIRV technology allows a single missile to carry multiple warheads, each capable of hitting different targets independently.
- Organization: The test was conducted by the DRDO, reinforcing India’s strategic deterrence and its position among a select group of nations with this advanced missile capability.
4. National Panchayat Awards 2025: Karnataka Leads
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj announced the winners of the National Panchayat Awards 2025, with Karnataka emerging as the top-performing state.
- Top States:
- Karnataka: 6 Awards
- Andhra Pradesh & Odisha: 5 Awards each
- Award Categories: Awards were conferred under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (for themes like Poverty-Free, Healthy, and Child-Friendly panchayats) and the Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar.
- Incentives: Winning panchayats will receive financial grants ranging from ₹50 lakh to ₹5 crore to further local development goals.
5. Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani Appointed as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS)
The Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
- Effective Date: He will assume charge on May 31, 2026, succeeding the current CDS, General Anil Chauhan.
- Distinguished Career: Prior to this appointment, Lt Gen Subramani served as the Military Adviser to the National Security Council Secretariat and previously as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff.
- Role: He will also function as the Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Military Affairs. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and has extensive experience in counter-insurgency and strike corps operations.
