1. India and South Korea Partner for First Mega Greenfield Shipyard in Tamil Nadu
In a major step to boost domestic maritime manufacturing, a landmark tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to develop India's first mega greenfield shipyard at Thoothukudi (Tuticorin), Tamil Nadu.
- The Framework: The project is the first major outcome under the India-Republic of Korea maritime cooperation framework called 'VOYAGES' (Shared Vision for Operation of Yard Assisted Growth with Efficiency and Scale).
- The Partnership: The agreement was signed between HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. Ltd. (HD KSOE), National Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries Park, Tamil Nadu Ltd. (NSHIP-TN), and the Sagarmala Finance Corporation Ltd.
- Capacity & Employment: The proposed facility will feature an annual shipbuilding capacity of 2.5 million Gross Tonnage (GT), making it one of the largest in India. It is projected to create over 15,000 direct jobs upon operational stabilization.
- Strategic Vision: This aligns with India's Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which aims to place the country among the world's top five shipbuilding nations.
2. V.D. Satheesan Sworn in as Chief Minister of Kerala
Congress leader V.D. Satheesan was officially sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Kerala on May 18, 2026, bringing the United Democratic Front (UDF) back to power in the state.
- The Ceremony: The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.
