  1. India has given 'Buddha' to the world, not 'Yuddha': PM Modi in Austria
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India has given 'Buddha' to the world, not 'Yuddha' (war) which means it has always given peace and prosperity, and therefore the country is going to strengthen its role in the 21st century, addressing the Indian community in Vienna. He also said that India is working towards being the best, the brightest, achieving the biggest and reaching the highest milestones.
    • "For thousands of years, we have been sharing our knowledge and expertise. We didn't give 'Yuddha' (war), we gave the world 'Buddha'. India always gave peace and prosperity, and therefore India is going to strengthen its role in the 21st century," PM Modi said in Austria, a day after he arrived here from Moscow where he highlighted the importance of finding a peaceful solution to the Ukraine conflict during his talks with President Vladimir Putin.
    • Describing his first visit to Austria as "meaningful", he said that after 41 years, an Indian Prime Minister has visited the country.
    • "This long wait has come to an end on a historic occasion. India and Austria are celebrating 75 years of their friendship," he said.
  2. Russia, India agreed to go ahead with trade in national currency: Russian diplomat
    • India and Russia have decided to establish a system for national currency settlement, Roman Babushkin, Chargé d’Affaires of the Russian Embassy, said.
    • A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi ended his two-day visit to Russia, Mr. Babushkin described the visit as “historic and game-changing”, and slammed the Western powers for supporting Ukraine.
    • He described the recently concluded peace conference in Switzerland as a tamasha (charade). He said that Russia’s friendship with China should not be a cause of concern for India.
    • “Russia is the fourth largest trading partner of India and we have a very optimistic scenario that we will continue our successful and mutually beneficial partnership with India.
    • The most important point of the Joint Statement was that we have decided to go ahead with the establishment of the national currencies settlement system,” Mr. Babushkin said, presenting an overview of the discussion between the Indian and Russian delegations in Moscow during the visit of Mr. Modi.

    • In a bid to boost Aatmanirbharta in the sector, Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has awarded seven new projects to industries under the Technology Development Fund scheme for various requirements of the Armed Forces and aerospace and defence sectors.
    • "These project sanctions are a testimony to the continuing endeavour of DRDO in nurturing Industries, especially MSMEs & start-ups, in defence and aerospace domains. The indigenous development of these technologies willstrengthen the military industrial ecosystem," said DRDO in an official statement.

  1. China warns NATO against 'provoking confrontation' over Russia ties
    • China warned NATO against "provoking confrontation" over its ties with Russia, after the alliance accused it of playing a key role in helping Moscow's assault on Ukraine.
    • NATO leaders said in a declaration from their summit in Washington that China had "become a decisive enabler of Russia's war against Ukraine".
    • It said Beijing's "so-called 'no limits' partnership" and "large-scale support for Russia's defence industrial base" were of "profound concern".
  2. China prepares to boost Shanghai bloc to counter the West
    • China is seeking to strengthen its leadership of an expanding bloc of nations it sees as a potential counterweight to the world order led by the United States.
    • Leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states met last week in Kazakhstan, with President Xi Jinping calling on strategic ally Russia and other partners to “firmly support each other”.
  3. US Coast Guard patrol spots Chinese naval ships off Alaska island
    • A US Coast Guard cutter on routine patrol in the Bering Sea came across several Chinese military ships in international waters but within the US exclusive economic zone, officials said. The crew detected three vessels approximately 124 miles (200 kilometers) north of the Amchitka Pass in the Aleutian Islands, the Coast Guard said in a statement. A short time later, a helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak spotted a fourth ship approximately 84 miles (135 kilometers) north of the Amukta Pass.
    • All four of the People's Republic of China vessels were "transiting in international waters but still inside the US Exclusive Economic Zone," which extends 200 nautical miles (370 kilometers) from the U.S. shoreline, the statement said.
    • "The Chinese naval presence operated in accordance with international rules and norms."

    • The 30-member Indian athletics team for the Olympics will train at three different venues abroad in their last leg of preparations before assembling in Paris on July 28, four days before the start of track and field competitions.
    • The Olympic Sports Center in Spala, Poland; Antalya in Turkey; and St Moritz in Switzerland are the three foreign destinations where Indian athletes will train in their last leg of preparations.
