  1. India to host first global summit for media and entertainment sector in November
    • India will host the first World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit in November alongside the International Film Festival of India in Goa, with I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw promising to strengthen the ecosystem for the protection of intellectual property rights in the media and entertainment sector.
    • Mr. Vaishnaw and Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant made the announcement of the first World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) in Goa from November 20- 24 and described it as a visionary initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as India seeks to make a mark in the media and entertainment sector.

    • In his maiden visit to Maharashtra after the recent Lok Sabha election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid foundation stones and inaugurated multiple public projects worth ₹29,396 crore, announcing that he aims to make Mumbai the world’s capital in financial technology and Maharashtra the leading State in tourism.
    • “I aim to use Maharashtra’s power to transform it into an economic powerhouse of the world. Want to make Mumbai the global fintech capital,” Mr. Modi said, adding that he also wants Maharashtra to scale the top of the tourism charts. “There are so many magnificent forts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, a rich Konkan coastline and the entire Sahyadri mountain range. There is immense potential to explore medical and conference tourism.”

    • The IAF recalled the force's contribution in the Kargil war 25 years ago during which it flew thousands of strike missions and helicopters sorties to bolster the Army's efforts in fighting against the adversary.
    • To commemorate the silver jubilee of the victory in the 1999 Kargil war, the Indian Air Force is celebrating 'Kargil Vijay Diwas Rajat Jayanti' at Air Force Station Sarsawa from July 12-26, honouring the bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation, the ministry of defence said in a statement.

  1. North Korea threatens to boost nuclear capability in reaction to US-South Korea deterrence guidelines
    • North Korea threatened to boost its nuclear fighting capability and make the US and South Korea pay "an unimaginably harsh price" as it slammed its rivals' new defence guidelines that it says reveal an intention to invade the North. President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol authorised the signing of joint nuclear deterrence guidelines as part of efforts to enhance their capabilities to cope with North Korea's growing nuclear arsenal.
    • The guidelines were adopted a year after the two countries established a consultation body to bolster information-sharing on nuclear operations and discuss how to integrate US nuclear weapons and South Korean conventional weapons in contingencies.
  2. US, Russian defense ministers speak for second time in less than month, Pentagon says
    • U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov spoke for a second time in just over two weeks amid tensions over the war in Ukraine, the Pentagon said.
    • The call was initiated by Russia, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh told a news briefing. Austin emphasized the importance of keeping open lines of communication during the Ukraine conflict, more than two years after Russia's full scale invasion, Singh said.
