1. 'Taiwan Travelogue' Wins the International Booker Prize 2026

In a historic triumph for East Asian literature, the novel Taiwan Travelogue has been officially awarded the prestigious International Booker Prize 2026.

  • The Laureates: The prize money of £50,000 is split equally between the author, Yáng Shuāng-zǐ, and the translator, Lin King.
  • The Narrative: Set in May 1938 during the Japanese colonial rule of Taiwan, the book follows a Japanese novelist exploring island life and its authentic cuisine through a local female interpreter. The judges praised it as "both a delicious romance and an incisive postcolonial novel."
  • Strategic Focus for Exams:
  • About the Award: The International Booker Prize is awarded annually for a single book translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland. It runs parallel to the Booker Prize (which is for original English fiction).
  • Literary Significance: Originally published in Mandarin Chinese in 2020, this masterpiece marks a watershed moment as the first-ever book from Taiwan to claim the International Booker Prize.

2. PM Narendra Modi Conferred with UN FAO’s Prestigious Agricola Medal

During his high-profile visit to Rome, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honored with the Agricola Medal for 2026 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

  • The Recognition: The award was presented by FAO Director-General Dr. Qu Dongyu at the FAO Headquarters. It recognizes PM Modi's exceptional leadership in addressing global food security, scaling up rural development, and championing sustainable agricultural practices.
  • The Dedication: PM Modi dedicated the medal to the Indian farming community and agricultural scientists, highlighting domestic tech-led breakthroughs like 'Per Drop More Crop', AI-based advisory portals, and the distribution of 3,000 climate-resilient crop varieties.
  • Strategic Focus for Exams:
  • Historical Milestone: PM Modi is only the second Indian Prime Minister to receive this honor, following Dr. Manmohan Singh in 2008. His visit also marked the first time an Indian Head of Government visited the FAO Headquarters in 30 years.
  • Core FAO Indicators Highlighted: The FAO specifically lauded India's financial inclusion models and the execution of the world’s largest food-based social safety net (PM-GKAY) covering 800 million citizens since the pandemic.

3. India and Italy Declare 2027 as the 'Year of Culture and Tourism'

Following bilateral talks between Indian PM Narendra Modi and Italian PM Giorgia Meloni in Rome, the two ancient peninsular civilizations formally declared 2027 as the India-Italy Year of Culture and Tourism.

  • The Mandate: The initiative aims to deepen bilateral relations through public diplomacy, massive two-way tourism campaigns, and robust academic exchanges particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) sectors.
  • Key Connectivity Parallel: Alongside cultural ties, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fast-tracking the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), aiming to unlock vast supply-chain and transit resilience between India and Europe.
  • Strategic Focus for Exams:
  • Heritage Diplomacy: As a part of this cultural push, a critical Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed for Italy to actively cooperate in developing India's landmark National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat.
  • Twinning Programme: Both nations are actively establishing a unique twinning infrastructure framework connecting major UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India and Italy to share technical expertise in archaeological restoration.

4. Kumbhalgarh Fort Wall Ranks Second Globally in UNESCO Survey

In an official comprehensive survey evaluation conducted under the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, the monumental fortification wall of Kumbhalgarh Fort in Rajasthan was globally recognized as the second-longest continuous wall on Earth.

  • The Standing: The structure stands second only to the Great Wall of China, solidifying its moniker as the "Great Wall of India."
  • Architectural Features: Built amidst the rugged Aravalli range, the massive wall stretches continuously for over 36 kilometers. It features a thickness varying from 15 to 21 feet, historically constructed to allow eight horses to march abreast for defensive patrolling.
  • Strategic Focus for Exams:
  • Historical Genesis: Located in the Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, the fort was constructed during the 15th century (1443–1458 AD) by Rana Kumbha, the ruler of the Mewar Kingdom. It is also celebrated as the birthplace of the legendary warrior Maharana Pratap.
  • UNESCO Tag: Kumbhalgarh is not an isolated heritage entity; it was formally inducted into the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2013 under the serial property cluster known as the "Hill Forts of Rajasthan" (which also includes Chittorgarh, Ranthambore, Gagron, Amer, and Jaisalmer forts).
