1. Chandrayaan-3 "Hop" Experiment Findings
ISRO released the scientific results from the historic "hop" maneuver executed by the Vikram lander near the lunar south pole. The maneuver involved reigniting its engines to leap 50 cm off the ground and land 30–50 cm away.
- Two-Layer "Cake" Structure: The data from the ChaSTE (Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment) probe debunked the assumption that lunar dust is uniform. The engine exhaust stripped away the top 3 cm of loose dust (the "fluff" layer), exposing older material.
- Geotechnical Shift: The surface layer is hyper-porous and acts like a thermal blanket (critical for trapping subsurface water-ice). However, just 6.5 cm down, the soil becomes twice as dense and five times more cohesive. For an astronaut, walking on the surface would feel like loose, dry flour, while a few inches deeper, it would feel like stiff, damp clay.
2. Cannes Triumph for Nepal's Elephants in the Fog
The Nepali feature film Elephants in the Fog (directed by Abinash Bikram Shah in his feature debut) made history at the Cannes Film Festival.
- The Award: The film won the prestigious Un Certain Regard Jury Prize, becoming the first Nepali feature film to ever win an award at Cannes.
- The Narrative: Set in a forested village in Nepal's southern Terai plains, the film explores the lives of a marginalized community of transgender women (Kinnar), balancing themes of community responsibility, missing persons, and local human-wildlife conflict involving wild elephant attacks.
3. India's First Geothermal Plant in Ladakh
The establishment of India's first commercial-scale geothermal power project at Puga Valley in Ladakh crossed a major hurdle with an official 5-year extension of its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
- The Scope: Spearheaded by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) at an altitude of over 14,000 feet, the pact extension gives the energy major time to overcome extreme weather delays.
- Next Steps: ONGC will establish a 1-MWe pilot geothermal power plant, deepening an existing 405-meter well to 1,000 meters to tap into high-pressure steam exceeding 200°C. It serves as a vital component in making Ladakh a carbon-neutral region.
4. Operation Navjeevan Surrenders in Jharkhand
In a significant blow to Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) in the region, 27 Maoist cadres surrendered to security forces in Ranchi.
- The Operation: The surrender was facilitated under the Jharkhand state government's Operation Navjeevan rehabilitation initiative, executed jointly by the Jharkhand Police, the specialized Jharkhand Jaguar anti-Naxal unit, and the Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF) COBRA battalion.
- The Impact: The surrendering group included high-ranking commanders and strike squad members from the banned CPI (Maoist) and the Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), who laid down their arms to benefit from the state's social reintegration and rehabilitation policy.
