1. Sunil Bharti Mittal Honoured with 2026 USISPF Leadership Award

Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, was presented with the prestigious 2026 Leadership Award by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF).

  • The Recognition: The award was presented at the 9th USISPF Annual Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. Mittal was explicitly recognized for his massive role in transforming India's telecommunications landscape and for his extensive contributions as a global business leader in strengthening economic and commercial ties between India and North America.
  • Other Elite Recipients: Alongside Mittal, the forum honored V. Prem Watsa (Chairman and CEO of Fairfax Financial Holdings) and Christopher T. Calio (Chairman and CEO of RTX Corporation) for their leadership in accelerating bilateral trade, strategic investment, and high-tech cooperation.
  • Strategic Takeaway: In his acceptance message, Mittal noted the expanding commercial and defense partnership between the two democracies and expressed strong optimism that the proposed India-US bilateral trade agreement—which industry leaders are eagerly awaiting—would be finalized in the coming weeks.

2. Vera C. Rubin Observatory Officially Launches Historic 10-Year LSST Cosmic Survey

Under the dark skies of Cerro Pachón in the Chilean Andes, the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory has officially kicked off its revolutionary Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST).

  • The Cosmic Movie: Funded jointly by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy, the LSST is a groundbreaking 10-year campaign designed to create the most comprehensive, high-definition time-lapse record of the southern sky in human history.
  • The Technology: Utilizing the largest digital camera ever constructed, the observatory will repeatedly scan the entire visible southern sky every few nights. It will return to each pinpoint location roughly 800 times over the decade, providing astronomers with an unprecedented, data-rich view of moving and changing cosmic phenomena.
  • Scientific Frontiers: The final dataset will contain billions of celestial objects and trillions of distinct measurements. It will serve as a premier global platform to discover subtle moving objects (such as near-Earth asteroids), map out supernova explosions, uncover the structural evolution of galaxies, and decode the deep cosmological mysteries surrounding dark energy and dark matter.

3. Himachal Pradesh Secures 8 New GI Tags, Pushing State Tally to 17

In a massive win for regional craftsmanship and indigenous agriculture, eight traditional products of Himachal Pradesh were officially granted Geographical Indication (GI) status through the Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology and Environment (HIMCOSTE).

  • The 8 New Additions: The fresh batch of GI tags covers a diverse array of handicrafts, agricultural produce, and culinary traditions unique to the state's distinct valleys:
  1. Spiti Seabuckthorn (Chharma): A highly nutritious, wild shrub fruit native to the cold deserts of Spiti.
  2. Salooni Safed Makka: The prized white maize grown traditionally in the Salooni region of Chamba.
  3. Chamba Metal Art: Exquisite metal casting and traditional engraving craft from Chamba.
  4. Sirmauri Loiya: A traditional woolen warm attire worn primarily in the Sirmaur district.
  5. Kinnauri Topi: The iconic green-banded cultural cap from Kinnaur.
  6. Sepu Vadi of Mandi: A famous, traditional lentil dumpling unique to Mandi's cuisine.
  7. Kinnauri Apple: High-quality apples celebrated for their exceptional crunch and deep crimson coloring.
  8. Kinnauri Jewellery: Intricate, historically significant traditional silver ornaments.
  • Economic Impetus: Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu highlighted that this recognition elevates the state's total GI portfolio from 9 to 17, providing critical legal protection against unauthorized imitation while dramatically enhancing the market valuation, branding, and export potential for local rural artisans and farmers.
