1. Tushar Mehta Reappointed as Solicitor General of India

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) officially approved the reappointment of Senior Advocate Tushar Mehta as the Solicitor General of India for another three-year term starting July 1, 2026.

  • Extended Leadership: Having held the post continuously since October 2018, this fresh extension will push his tenure to 11 years by its conclusion, making him one of the longest-serving law officers in the nation's history.
  • The Supporting Legal Team: Alongside the Solicitor General, the ACC approved three-year extensions for five senior Additional Solicitors General (ASGs) in the Supreme Court: Vikramjit Banerjee, K.M. Nataraj, Suryaprakash V. Raju, N. Venkataraman, and Aishwarya Bhati.
  • High-Stakes Mandate: Mehta will continue to spearhead the Union Government's critical litigation and defense strategies before the Supreme Court on core matters including constitutional interpretations, border disputes, and national digital infrastructure laws.

2. Indian Army Evaluates 'Garudastra' 120mm Mobile Mortar System

In mid-June 2026, defense and aerospace manufacturer Nibe Limited conducted high-profile, successful live fire evaluations of Garudastra, India's heaviest 120mm vehicle-mounted mortar system, for the Indian Army at the Infantry School in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh.

  • Advanced Capabilities: The trials highlighted Garudastra's exceptional field parameters, showing it can move into action and establish a secure firing position in under 30 seconds. A two-member crew successfully demonstrated a high burst-firing velocity of 12 rounds in 60 seconds.
  • Tactical Features:
  • Shoot-and-Scoot: It can deliver heavy payloads and relocate in under 15 seconds, allowing field units to escape counter-battery radar tracking and retaliatory fire.
  • MRSI (Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact): The system successfully fired three heavy rounds along separate ballistic trajectories that struck the target area at the exact same second.
  • Network-Centric Precision: The mortar integrates with tactical command control networks, allowing forward surveillance drone feeds to provide real-time target coordinates and course corrections for its GPS and laser-guided munitions at a range of 7 to 10 kilometers.

3. Annual Mela Kheer Bhawani Celebrated in Kashmir Valley

On June 22, 2026, thousands of Kashmiri Pandits and devotees from across India gathered at the holy Ragnya Devi Temple in Tulmulla, Ganderbal, to celebrate the historic annual Mela Kheer Bhawani.

  • Cultural Harmony: Marking the sacred occasion of Jyeshtha Ashtami, the event remains a cornerstone symbol of communal harmony (Kashmiriyat) in the valley, with local residents traditional welcoming the visiting pilgrims.
  • The Sacred Spring: Devotees performed traditional rituals and offered milk and kheer (rice pudding) at the temple's central spring. The spring holds massive spiritual significance as its water is traditionally believed to change colors, indicating spiritual transitions and the geopolitical well-being of the region.
