1. India’s Rank in the 2026 World Hydropower Outlook

The International Hydropower Association (IHA) officially released its 2026 World Hydropower Outlook, highlighting a global structural shift toward utilizing flexible hydropower as the world's primary "water battery" for grid stability.

  • The Global Standings: India is not the 5th largest in overall installed capacity; it actually occupies the 5th spot globally in total conventional hydropower and pumped-storage capacity, sitting comfortably behind China (1st), Brazil (2nd), the United States (3rd), and Canada (4th). India ranks just ahead of Russia, Japan, and Norway.
  • Massive Annual Growth: The report highlights that India added an impressive 4,267 megawatts (MW) of new hydropower capacity over the last calendar year alone, single-handedly leading all developments across Central and South Asia. This brings India's total operational hydropower capacity to 56,336 MW.
  • Future Policy Focus: Driven by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) identifying over 288 GW of clean pumped-storage potential, India is pursuing a long-term roadmap to establish 100 GW of pumped-storage capacity by 2035–36. This serves as a vital component to buffer the rapid expansion of domestic solar and wind infrastructure.

2. 30th Edition of Exercise RIMPAC Kicks Off in Hawaii

The United States Navy Pacific Fleet officially commenced Exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2026, the world's largest international maritime warfare training framework.

  • Timeline & Location: The massive biennial exercise officially started its operations on June 24, 2026, and is scheduled to run through July 31, 2026, in and around the strategic waters of the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California.
  • The Scale: Marking the 30th milestone iteration of the series since its inception in 1971, RIMPAC 2026 features a coalition of 30 nations, 31 surface warships, 5 submarines, 15 national land forces, over 206 aircraft, and roughly 30,000 military personnel.
  • The Core Theme: Guided by the operational banner "Partners: Integrated and Prepared", the multinational leadership structure features high-level commanders from partner nations, including a Chilean Navy Commodore serving as the Deputy Commander and a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Rear Admiral as the Vice Commander.
  • Indian Navy's Deployment: The Indian Navy has actively deployed its advanced P-8I long-range maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The Indian deployment focuses heavily on sharpening joint maritime domain awareness, cross-deck helicopter operations, and complex multi-national anti-submarine warfare drills to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific.
